The action takes place in Kiev in the winter of 1918-1919. The typical way of life has been destroyed and replaced by chaos and confusion, as the “damn comedy” of Hetman rule shifts to the “black fog” of Petliura.
The destructive force of the time is juxtaposed by the harmonious, comfortable world of the Turbin family, with its cream-colored curtains, fireplace and grand piano. Here, love, friendship, understanding, music and joy reign supreme. The Turbin household is a place where “the clock played a gavotte, and where the end of December always had a scent of fir- needles, and multicoloured paraffin burned on green branches” - a quiet harbor, an island of culture, spirituality and humanity in the face of tempestuous rancor and meaninglessness. Is it possible to save that world when a person’s private life enters into irreconcilable conflict with Time..?
The premiere took place on November 1st, 2011.
Duration: 3 hours and 30 minutes with one intermission. For audiences 16 and up.
