Grigory Kozlov was born on March 6th, 1955 in Leningrad. After graduating from the Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute he worked as an engineer. In 1983 he began his studies at the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Film at its School of Puppet Theatre, from which he graduated in 1989. He staged his first production – Sasha Chyorny’s Concerto for Piano and Actor, a monodrama with Alexei Devotchenko – in 1990. That production’s success came later, as it initially passed unnoticed. He received critical recognition for his next directorial work – Moscow. Agony in the Garden – was declared the best production of the 1991/1992 season and the best directorial debut. But it was his 1994 production of Crime and Punishment on the stage of the Bryantsev Theatre of Young Spectators that became a true theatrical sensation. That production brought him nationwide fame.
From that point on, the theatre scene in Petersburg has in many ways been defined by Grigory Kozlov’s productions. Critics note the high professional level of his productions, his adherence to the Russian psychological school of theatre and his subtle and painstaking work with actors. Spectators are above all attracted by the kindness and humaneness of his productions, and by his love for and attention to each individual. Grigory Kozlov is one of those rare people for who humanism is not an abstract concept, but a creed for life and art.
Kozlov has staged many productions in the theatres of our city, among them the Alexandrinsky, the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre and the Theatre on Liteiny. From 2002 until 2007, Grigory Kozlov was the Artistic Director of the Bryantsev Theatre of Young Spectators. He likewise stages plays all over Russia and abroad.
Grigory Kozlov has on many occasions received prestigious prizes and awards. In 2000 he was granted the State Prize of the Russian Federation for his productions P.S. and The Forest. Since 1994 Kozlov has taught at the Saint Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy, where he has headed his own studio since 1996. Theatre pedagogy is yet another aspect of Grigory Kozlov’s talent. His graduates – actors and directors – are well-known in Petersburg and in Russia. In 2009 Professor Kozlov became the laureate of the Saint Petersburg Government Prize for his “distinct success in the field of preparing artistic workers for cultural and artistic organizations.
In 2010 he founded the Masterskaya and has been its Artistic Director ever since.
